Saudi Arabia ‘executes Nigerian woman, 3 others

Saudi Arabia has executed a Nigerian woman convicted of trafficking drugs, AFP news agency quotes state media as reporting.

Confirming the execution, Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry said four people were executed on Monday for drug trafficking, including one woman, bringing to 53 the number of people put to death this year.
Two Pakistani men, a Yemeni man, and a Nigerian woman were executed in the holy city of Mecca, the ministry said in statements carried by the official Saudi Press Agency. The woman was executed along with two Pakistani men and a Yemeni man in Islam’s holiest city, Mecca, on Monday.

A total of 53 people have been executed in the kingdom so far this year, AFP reports.

Saudi kingdom has one of the world’s highest execution rates, with those convicted of terrorism, homicide, rape, armed robbery, and drug trafficking facing the death penalty.

Rights experts have repeatedly raised concerns about the fairness of trials in the kingdom, governed under a strict form of Islamic law.
Saudi Arabia has resisted pressure from campaign groups to abolish the death penalty, saying it is a deterrent against crime.

120 people were executed last year.
