EFCC Arraigns 3 Lawyers For Assaulting Detective

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday arraigned three lawyers Lateef Abdulsalam, Evans Okwuede and Mrs. Abiodun Kolawole before a Lagos State Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ikeja for allegedly assaulting one of its detectives, Mrs. Patience Kalu.
The three lawyers, who are members of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), were docked before the court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, resisting a public officer and assault.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Raji Akeem the accused persons committed the offence at 11 a.m., on March 4, during the monthly meeting of the Ikeja Branch of the NBA.

Akeem also informed the court that Kalu was assaulted by the defendants while trying to effect the arrest of a former Chairman of the Branch, Yinka Farounbi, over allegations of financial misappropriation.

The prosecutor further alleged that the defendants assaulted Kalu and inflicted injuries on her hand and neck.

He maintained that the offences is contrary to sections 117, 174 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendants however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Based on their plea, Chief Magistrate O. A Layinka granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety in like sum each.

The Magistrate also ordered that the sureties, who must be lawyers, must provide their NBA seal as proof.

She then adjourned the case to May 15 for commencement of trial.
